In humans, Galectin 3 is encoded by the LGALS3 gene and is approximately 35 kDa in weight. This protein is a member of the lectin protein family, and is characterised by its carbohydrate-recognition-domain (CRD) that enables the specific binding of beta-galactosides. This binding activity is important for its role in cellular processes including cell-cell adhesion, macrophage activation, metastasis and apoptosis. Furthermore, changes in Galectin 3 protein levels and gene expression is associated with an increased risk of fibrosis, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer. In cancer, changes in Galectin 3 expression and localisation has been shown to promote cancer cell growth and spread, and suppression of the immune system. As a result, galectin 3 is now widely used as indicators and biomarkers for disease, and is a potential target for the development of therapeutic agents for treatment of fibrosis, CVD and cancer.
