| Description | Hypoxanthine Phosphoribosyl Transferase or HPRT (EC 2.4.2.8) plays an important role in the generation of purine nucleotides through the purine salvage pathway and is present in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The enzyme converts guanine to guanosine monophosphate and hypoxanthine to inosine monophosphate by transferring a phosphoribosyl group from phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate (PRPP) to the purine molecule, and releases an inorganic pyrophosphate molecule in the process. Mutations in HPRT lead to developmental disorders such as Lesch Nyhan Disease (LND), characterized by neurological and behavioral abnormalities.
