| Description | Apoptosis is a controlled phenomenon in which apoptotic cells are characterized by changes in nucleus (i.e. chromatin condensation, DNA fragmentation), cytoplasm shrinkage and production of apoptotic bodies. These are subsequently phagocytosed by macrophages, parenchymal cells, or neoplastic cells. DNA strand breaks can be analyzed by TUNEL (Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP Nick End-Labeling) assays.
